The Victorian Era began when Queen Victoria reigned in England from 1839 to 1901. This period of history is one of the most beloved for its attention to high morals, modesty and proper decorum, as inspired by the Queen and her husband, Prince Albert. There was a great importance placed on civic conscience and social responsibility engendered notable developments toward gender and racial equality, such as the legal abolishment of slavery in America which had been abolished in the European countries. The Victorian Era was also an optimistic time in which scientific and industrial invention thrived. Developments in printing produced a proliferation of Victorian scrap art, cards, and magazines. In addition, humanitarian and religious organizations such as the Salvation Army reflected the Victorian concern for the poor and needy of the period.

Many events happened during the Victorian Era, such as: The Trail of Tears, The Mexican War, the finding of gold in California and the influx in immigrants from the Orient to the West. But one of the most important events in American history, that was also the darkest hours of this country's history, happened in this era from 1861 until 1865. It ravaged the United States for four years and changed the country forever. The war that was brother against brother and family against family was also hard on the women left at home. They had to raise their children, take care of their homes/farms and try to survive four years of struggle and death.
